About the Author:
Dvora Swickle (AKA D.A. Johnson) lives in the quaint fishing village of Gig Harbor, Washington. She has been entertaining and writing for children (including two of her own) for over 20 years. She has written over 40 stories, and is the author of "Dress Up", a compendium of poetry for children. A second book is due soon.

Dvora's motto is "Time To Read Another Book" (TTRAB), as she encourages young children to develop a life-long love for language and for reading. To entice kids to read, Dvora believes that poetry can play a big role:

"Poetry helps young readers understand language, words and feelings through rhythm and rhyme. They feel comfortable with poems, and love the quirkiness of funny situations and characters."

In Dvora's poetry and stories, a positive attitude toward life is prevalent, and each story has a moral ending. "My stories present situations where something is wrong, but then show the way to how it can often be fixed and life goes on," she says. "Children have a need to belong, and everyone has a right to feel important. These little poems and stories help them feel good about the world and themselves."

Bird Thought

I saw it,
I saw it right now.
If I'm quick,
lunch will be now.
If I'm not,
such a thought.
Oh, I thought a lot,
here lunch it not!

Hibble Bibble, Hubble, A Knot

Hibble Bibble talked to Hubble
for a knot he could not tie.
Hibble Bibble babbled about
Hubble showed the first knot.
Hubble tried to teach
Hibble Bibble to tie a knot.
"You must watch", he cried,
"You mustn't babble."
Hibble Bibble babbled non stop
and the knot was not
because Hubble could not
teach Hibble Bibble
to Hubble a knot.

Pickles and Peanut Butter

Pickles and peanut butter
you do not have to utter
I know one from another
that pickles and peanut butter
go well together
even on a spoon
or all alone
peanut butter is good
but take a moment
and spread it on
because, pickles turn peanut butter on
so when you are all alone
nothing to eat
spoon it on
spread it out
crunch it up
for pickles and peanut butter
do each other good...

Snookies

Snookie played hooky
from school one day.
Writing and reading
is not for me, he'd say.
Arithmetic is kiddy stuff,
spelling is for bees.
All snookie could see,
is fishing, fishing, fishing.

If I fish and fish all day,
I will have fish upon my plate.
Then snap, twang, swizzle--
the hook snapped off the swivel.
It all dropped you see,
down to the ground.
Snookie thought—
What shall I do,
dropping to his knees.

He pulled out his fishy book,
it looked like Japanese.
It showed how to tie the line,
swivel the hook, hook it, then bait.
Snookie couldn't do it,
maybe it's not too late!
So Snookie went back to school,
the fish will have to wait.
For maybe schoolings not so bad,
there Snookie will learn a trade.
